BYA Seeking Summer Design Studio Coordinator

Baltimore Youth Arts (BYA) is an artist-educator run, after school program that provides arts and job readiness programming to youth, with a focus on those involved in the juvenile justice system. Our mission is to assist young people in gaining the creative, personal, and educational skills that will enable them to become leaders in their communities. BYA uses the arts to engage youth with the goal of building long-lasting, mentoring relationships. We believe that the arts are a path towards social, emotional, and educational development.

30 hours/week

$22/hour

Dates: 6/20/16-8/19/16

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group of 7-8 youth in the Summer Employment Program
  • Develop collaborative and individual projects
  • Provide clear expectations to youth employees
  • Assist the Design Team in developing clothing and household items as well as reproducible pieces of art that can be sold on the online store and at special events
  • Design at least one field trip related to the work of the Visuals Team (i.e. studio visit, museum trip)
  • Collaborate with other BYA staff in developing and implementing weekly Job and Life Skills training sessions
  • Assist youth in completing job and life skills activities
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and weekly summer employment meetings
  • Collect daily attendance for Design Team youth
  • Maintain a set budget for the summer program
  • Recruit visiting artists and guest critics to present to the Design Team
  • Assist in maintaining BYA Community Studio by ensuring that youth have access to supplies and that the work space is organized

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current creative practice related to job
  • At least three years working in your medium
  • Prior experience teaching or working with teenagers/young adults (minimum of 6 months)
  • Patience and a sense of humor!
