Make Studio is pleased to present the 4th installment of Cordially Invited, our invitational exhibition and set of complementary programming featuring artworks created in innovative U.S. and international studios that serve artists with disabilities. Cordially Invited celebrates the exciting and thought-provoking art produced in progressive art studios as a way to better understand and appreciate our neuro-diverse world.
Joshua Johnson is recognized as one of the first professional African American portraitists in the United States. An interesting aspect of his work in the early Republic was the patronage he received from the newly emerging merchant class in Baltimore during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In this behind-the-scenes conversation with Mark Letzer, President & CEO of the Maryland Center for History and Culture, learn more about the people Johnson painted in his Fells Point community, and explore the nationally significant collection of Joshua Johnson portraits at MCHC.
Join us Friday, October 15th at 7:30pm as we celebrate the thirty-six 2021 Baker Artist Awardees on the annual Artworks special on Maryland Public Television. The special will air at 7:30 on MPT-HD, and will also be repeated throughout the weekend. This virtual discussion will explore the historical and contemporary perspectives on witchcraft, archetypes of femininity, and their relationship to contemporary culture. Allison Tolman, Vice President of Collections & Interpretation at MCHC, will dive into discussion with Neal Hurst, historic tailor and Associate Curator of Costume & Textiles at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
