In this “tour de force” concert, Byron Stripling showcases ragtime masters Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton in addition to blues legends B.B. King and Muddy Waters. Stripling’s entertaining and humorous vignettes about the music and its creators, with a finale that closes with an unforgettable toe-tapping jam session, are not to be missed. Stripling is joined by keyboardist Bobby Floyd of the Ray Charles, Dr. John, and Count Basie Bands.
Four-time Grammy® Award-winner and violinist extraordinaire Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the BSO for Beethoven’s lyrical Violin Concerto in D Major, a work that pushed the boundaries of the concerto and still thrills audiences today. Sir Andrew Davis, Principal Conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, presents two picturesque and evocative tales from the English repertoire, a passionate work from Delius’ opera A Village Romeo and Juliet and Elgar’s masterful tone poem Falstaff.
The final concert of the season includes Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini featuring Italian pianist Beatrice Rana, whose playing is noted by The London Times as having "a kind of Orphic seductiveness, a transcendent lightness of touch.” The rhapsody has a historical connection to the region, as it was premiered by Rachmaninoff himself at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore.
