From Lincoln Center to Baltimore - Regional Debut of The Mystery of Love & Sex Premiers January 25!

POWER-HOUSE CAST BRINGS BATHSHEBA’S DORAN’S MODERN QUEER CLASSIC TO LIFE AT HISTORIC BALTIMORE THEATRE PROJECT.

"Perfectly wonderful! Among the season's finest plays. It is tender, funny, packed with hu- manity and brimming with surprising revelations. Bathsheba Doran has written a play with such compassion and wry wisdom that I emerged from the theater into yet another frigid day feeling warmed from within." - The New York Times

"Wise and exquisitely crafted." - Time Out New York

BALTIMORE, Maryland - January 15th, 2018: Straight from Lincoln Center Theatre in NYC and from critically-acclaimed playwright Bathsheba Doran, comes a new modern queer classic heralded by the New York Times as, “Perfectly wonderful! Among the season's finest plays.” Deep in the American South, The Mystery of Love and Sex follows Charlotte and Jonny who have been best friends since they were nine. She’s Jewish, he’s Christian; he’s black, she’s white. Their differences intensify their connection, and they are now trying to determine whether their close friendship might be something more. When they discover exactly what “more” entails, sexual desire complicates everything in surprising, compulsive ways, as it comes as a surprise to them both — and to Charlotte’s parents, who are holding secrets and resentments of their own. An unexpected love story about where souls meet and the consequences of growing up, this compelling and spirited narrative of intricate relationships is an entertaining and explosive look at race, sexual identity, and family dynamics.

"The Mystery of Love and Sex is a love poem about coming of age, self-discovery, and redefining what it means to be family. Bathsheba Doran’s puzzle of a play (there is a reason it has the word mystery in the title) delightfully upends audience expectations, expertly peeling back layers of façade while slowly revealing the characters essential and true selves,” said director Dr. Natka Bianchini. “Witty, poignant, surprising, and painful, The Mystery of Love and Sex is a hilarious and touching journey that reminds us all what it means to see and be seen by those that love us most.”

“This season dares us all to engage with our pain, our fear, and our ability to love both ourselves and others in hopes of becoming who we wish to be,” said Artistic Director Sean Elias. “The Mystery of Love and Sex brings this challenge forth while furthering Iron Crow’s commitment to becoming the best theatre we can and offering our community of artists and patrons a powerful new play, direct from Lincoln Center Theater in New York City. For the third time this season our show will include a professional Equity actor, alongside some of the most talented performers in the region, as we continue to build upon our foundation towards achieving our goal of becoming Baltimore’s next Equity theatre.”
