Occasional Symphony Seeks Volunteer Executive Director

The Occasional Symphony, a Baltimore grassroots orchestra and 501(c)(3) organization, currently seeks a creative and resourceful individual to serve as Executive Director. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors and Music Director to develop, implement, and monitor strategies that achieve organizational goals. The Executive Director partners with the Music Director and Board of Directors to plan the organization’s concert schedule, including programming, issuing artist contracts, and booking venues. The Executive Director also serves as Chief Administrative Officer for the Board of Directors and its committees on fundraising, governance, and strategic planning.

Other Duties include:

  • Ensure successful implementation of all aspects of the Occasional Symphony’s programming agenda, including scheduling, outreach, budget, coordination with partnering organizations/venues, publicity, and communication.
  • Provide direction, coordination, and supervision of all Occasional Symphony initiatives to maintain active and continuing interest in its projects.
  • Work closely with board and staff to maintain existing programs and resources, develop new mission-driven initiatives, and ensure that all activities are kept within budget and on deadline.
  • Assist the Board to develop and implement sound organizational policies and practices in accordance with the organizational mission.
  • With the Director of Development, cultivate a broad donor base and audience.
  • Closely manage budgets and finances, and oversee all administration in compliance with relevant state and federal rules and regulations. Work closely with the Finance Committee to prepare annual budgets and provide timely and accurate financial reports to the Board.
  • Serve as an articulate and persuasive representative and spokesperson of the Occasional Symphony and liaise between the organization and vendors, media, and community partners.
  • Build relationships with and support from local and state organizations.
  • Further develop the Occasional Symphony’s community partnerships.

The Executive Director begins official duties on October 1, 2017.

This is a volunteer position. The Executive Director of the Occasional Symphony will gain non-profit management experience and the opportunity to work with a highly dedicated and skilled board, staff, and orchestra to contribute to the cultural life of Baltimore City.

Qualifications:

  • Interest and experience in the arts and humanities
  • Experience working with non-profit and/or volunteer organizations
  • Proven initiative, organization, and flexibility in managing an organization
  • Knowledge of and experience in business and budget management, marketing or related field preferred
  • Exceptional organizational skills - very detail oriented, with the ability to multitask
  • Skills in advocacy and partnership building
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable with quick turnaround in email communications.
  • Experience in preparing detailed budgets.
  • Bachelor's degree; post-graduate education in the arts, humanities, or non-profit management preferred
