UMBC Department of Visual Arts seeks Program Specialist

Join the Department of Visual Arts’ technical staff team (department chair, business services specialist and the three exempt staff members) to manage the continuously evolving technology needs, facilities operation and instructional requirements of the department.

The Department of Visual Arts has 350 undergraduate majors and 16 graduate students in a non-traditional Visual Arts department. B.F.A. and B.A. degrees are offered in the following areas: Animation, Cinematic Arts, Graphic Design, Inter-media, Photography, Print Media and a B.A. in Art History and Museum Studies. We also offer an M.F.A. program in Inter-media and Digital Arts.

Responsibilities:

Independent responsibilities include: management of the graduate (M.F.A.) program’s “maker space studio labs” on the UMBC campus as well as the off-campus studios in downtown Baltimore; oversee the needs of the Foundations (Visual Arts Core curriculum) program and the Graphic Design concentration; maintain the department’s photocopy machines used for instruction and class assignments; manage all modes of key/fob/swipe card access for the department; supervise non-academic duties of graduate research assistants and undergraduate student workers; and perform other duties as assigned.

This exempt, full time staff appointment is scheduled to begin in January 2018.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) or equivalent degree. Two years [or more] of experience and background in art and /or design is required.

Ability to lifting loads up to 25 pounds and moving equipment on carts and light classroom furniture.

Using hand tools during equipment maintenance and simple repairs.

Standing on concrete floors for extended periods while maintaining or fixing equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Preferably knowledge of the aesthetic and technical aspects of these fields.

2. An advanced degree in a related field (M.F.A.; M.Des.; M.A.; M.S.) is preferred.
