Port Discovery Children’s Museum seeks a creative, mission oriented and strategic leader to provide direction over the delivery of interactive and virtual educational experiences, and to inspire learning through play and life-long curiosity.

General Summary of the Job:

As an advocate for the power of play, the Director of Education will lead and manage the educational initiatives of the museum, including the focus, design, and implementation of engaging educational programming for all museum environments (on site, in schools and in the community, and online), the evaluation and reporting of these programs, and the connections with relevant educational and community focused organizations. The Director will lead a team of educational managers and their teams in the strategic planning of interactive and relevant educational programming that aligns to the museum’s mission, vision, strategic roadmap, and education and child development standards and best practices, as well as the development and management of the department budget, high quality and effective implementation of all programs, and the development of associated grants, evaluations, and reporting.

The Director of Education will report to the museum president and will work collaboratively with members of the leadership team, including Guest Services, Marketing, Creative, Development, Exhibits, and Sales to ensure high quality innovative program design, development, and implementation and the highest quality museum experience for all audiences.

The workweek for this position is currently Monday – Friday; however scheduled work hours will be adjusted at times according to the needs and events of the department and museum. Participation in certain special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be necessary at times.

Minimum Qualifications and What We Need:

  • You will be a great fit for us if you have a Bachelor’s degree in education, early childhood education, museum studies or a related field. A Master’s degree would be even better.
  • Extensive experience in early childhood, family engagement, community involvement and the 2Gen approach is essential.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervising staff and leading teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and interdepartmentally.
  • Experience with grant applications and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience with departmental budget planning and management.
  • Current and active knowledge of community and educational organizations and initiatives with a focus on Baltimore, surrounding counties, and Maryland.
  • Experience with formative and summative program evaluation and management and the ability to analyze and interpret data.

Work Location:

Currently, the Museum (located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor) is open on Saturdays and Sundays to the public, plus some holidays. The building is accessible to staff other days as needed.

Partial remote work is temporarily permitted due to COVID-19.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must be able to meet physical demands of job to include predominately sedentary / sitting aspect, plus occasional walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling and lifting / moving objects up to 25 pounds. Work is performed indoors, and the noise level is usually moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, along with online tools for virtual programming and meetings.
