Full Circle Dance Company Celebrates a Decade in Baltimore with Ten Favorite Dances on October 10, 2010

Community Events and Special Artistic Collaborations Will Lead Up to Anniversary Celebration

Full Circle Dance Company is one of Baltimore’s homegrown artistic treasures, a racially diverse, artistically productive professional company that presents choreography from the region and beyond.

On October 10, 2010, the company will celebrate ten years of making its home in Baltimore with a performance of ten of the best works it has presented over the past decade. Moving excerpts from the company’s deep investigations of race and religion, favorites by award-winning company director Donna L. Jacobs, and signature dances by Ohio-based choreographer Travis Gatling will reflect the eclectic nature of the company’s programming and its commitment to both athleticism and story-telling.

Full Circle is known for its unusual approach to creating and commissioning choreography. The company chooses a theme each year that reflects the concerns of both dancers and the broader community, then invites 5 or more choreographers to explore that theme. The 10/10/10 anniversary performance will showcase some of the best works from the company’s thematic projects on race and religion.

The evening will explicitly honor the rich ten-year partnership between Gatling and Full Circle, which has generated five dynamic new works and premiered three others for Baltimore audiences. Gatling’s dances are well-known for their emotional power and lush physicality, and this decade-long collaboration has offered a rare opportunity for company, choreographer, and audience to develop and grow together.

In recognition of the many dancers and choreographers who have helped shape Full Circle over the years, alumni and special guests will join current company members onstage in a rousing, floor-shaking excerpt from Gatling’s Sin Shakers and Shouters.

Full Circle has a history of collaborating with the community, and the company will also celebrate its tenth birthday by presenting the works of other artists and encouraging the public to dance. A choreographer’s showcase, a visual arts exhibit, and participatory mini dance classes for the public will all be part of the fall 2010 buildup to the anniversary performance.

“We are proud of what we’ve built here in Baltimore”, says company director Donna L. Jacobs, “and we want to celebrate this milestone with the community that has nourished, supported, and inspired our work for the past decade.”
