Söndörgö, new Balkan music

Söndörgö

“Their music sparkles with virtuosity and foot-tapping joie de vivre” - London Evening Standard

Söndörgö (pronounced sunderger) play a style of music that is hugely attractive, but little known and quite different to the traditional, fiddle-led Hungarian repertoire. Their aim is to foster and preserve Southern Slavic traditions of the Serbs and Croats as found in various settlements in Hungary.

In contrast to most groups playing Balkan music, Söndörgö isn’t playing brass band music, it is a “tamburitza band”.

The tambura is a small and agile plucked instrument similar to the mandolin which is occasionally supplemented by wind instruments and accordion.

After a beautiful debut on the international scene with their album "Tamburising - Lost music of the Balkans", this atypical Hungarian Tambura band will charm and thrill the audience with a new album coming out in the Summer 2014 on the label World Music Network: "Tamburocket" an UFO between archaism and modernity, on the steps of Béla Bartók.

Their approach to traditional music is at the same time very respectful with the instruments, and virtuoso, young and fresh by its interpretation.
