Red Nose Clown Workshop
ANNEX THEATER is pleased to announce, as part of their ongoing educational series, GLOBUS HYSTERICUS's RED NOSE CLOWN WORKSHOP
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL—SIGN UP BY JAN. 1 AND SAVE! DETAILS BELOW!
THE WORKSHOP
There are as many ways to approach clown as there are opinions on what clown, as a theatrical genre, is. This workshop derives its method from the work of Giovanni Fusetti, who linked the approach of Jacques Lecoq with practices of somatic psychology.
Lecoq contributed the concept of the red nose as the smallest mask. Accordingly, the workshop covers Leqoc principles of mask play: contact, the mask take, articulation of movement, the levels of play, and breath.
The participants and pedagogues will also analyze the movement dynamics of each participant—their rhythm, gait, gestural habits, etc.—and explore the expressive themes inherent in each performer’s movement and physical presence. This engenders an awareness that is then transformed (“transpersonalized”/“masked”), by way of amplification and play, into the clown state.
Finally, the group enters into solo and duo improvization, expanding the life of the clown and introducing the process of writing from the clown state.
THE TEACHERS
Alenka Marinič (Slovenia) and Justin Durel (USA) are independent theatre artists who have created performances (acted in, directed by, and otherwise) throughout Europe, the US, and Canada. They have been teaching together since 2013, when they finished their studies at the Helikos International School of Theatre Creation, under master teacher Giovanni Fusetti. Stemming from the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, their workshops explore theatre and performance from a physical perspective, always emphasizing the interaction between technique and play. They have taught workshops in Slovenia, the US, Italy, and Germany
THE PEDAGOGY
The laws of movement determine the tools with which the performer can play. The performer’s use of these tools is called technique. The performers enjoyment in using these tools is called play. Exploring breath, spatial awareness, human postures, gestures, and body language, the pedagogy of Durel and Marinič focuses on the emotions that arise when technique and play coincide.
Please note that participants are expected to attend the entirety of the workshop.
