In Between/ Bar Bahr

Dir Maysaloun Hamoud | 2016 | 96 min | Hebrew & Arabic w/ English Subtitles
IN BETWEEN is a witty and buoyant comedic drama about three independent young Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv struggling to find their way through Arab-Israeli culture, nightlife, and identity. Maysaloun Hamoud's debut feature is a dazzling and intelligent portrait of this often overlooked demographic. Caught between hometown tradition and big-city abandon, these women often pay a heavy price for what seems a given to many: the freedom to work, party, and choose their own lifestyle. Leila, a criminal lawyer from a bourgeois secular Muslim family, works during the day and parties at night. Her roommate Salma is a lesbian DJ from a “liberal” Christian family. When Nour, a pious Muslim girl, becomes their new roommate, things become even more complicated, bringing the three together as they find a way to survive with grace and humor.
A first-of-its kind portrait of young women, Palestinian citizens of Israel, living and loving in Tel-Aviv. It captures their daily duality, caught between hometown tradition and big city abandon, and the price they must pay for a lifestyle of freedom.

"After watching Maysaloun Hamoud’s sparkling, taboo-breaking first feature IN BETWEEN (Bar Bahar), audiences will have to seriously update their ideas about the lifestyle of Palestinian women in Israel.”- Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter
