Double bill: Greg Schatz & The Seth Kibel Quintet

Double bill: Greg Schatz & The Seth Kibel Quintet

A 1-2 punch from Baltimore to the Big Easy with Greg Schatz (from NOLA) and The Seth Kibel Quintet, featuring Flo Anito (CD release show)

ABOUT GREG
Greg Schatz writes and plays music that gets stuck in your head. Steeped in tradition yet completely original, his songs give words to life’s hard-to-describe moments.

Small Peace of Mind, released June 2017, is his sixth overall full-length album of original material; it expands the song-driven mix of roots music he began exploring with his 2012 record, Where the River Meets the Railroad Tracks, and the 2015 follow up, Everything That You Wanted. Small Peace of Mind further solidifies Schatz’s musical vision, informed by the traditions of New Orleans piano masters and a myriad of songwriters, from Jelly Roll Morton to the Kinks. His core backing band, The Friggin’ Geniuses – Doug Garrison (The Iguanas; Alex Chilton, Panorama Jazz Band) and Paul Santopadre (The Song Dogs, Pigeon Town) on drums, Alex McMurray (Royal Fingerbowl, The Tin Men) and Dave James (Gal Holiday, Dirty Mouth) on guitars and Dave Stover (Bicyle Jones, Lynn Drury) on bass – is a New Orleans all-star team, seamlessly locking into a groove and bringing the most out of every song.

“Schatz is one of the city’s great songwriters. He has a knack for taking life’s everyday moments, often some of the quirkier ones, and using fresh lyrics and catchy melodies to shed new light on them.”– Laura DeFazio, OffBeat Magazine

ABOUT SETH AND FLO
Seth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists, working with some of the best bands in klezmer, jazz, swing, and more. Wowing audiences on saxophone, clarinet, and flute, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region, and beyond. He is the featured performer with The Alexandria Kleztet, Bay Jazz Project, Music Pilgrim Trio, The Natty Beaux, and more. He is also the winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies), including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005, 2007-8, 2011-14). His most recent recording, Seth Kibel Presents Songs of Snark & Despair, was released in 2017 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. With a progressive outlook and an unhealthy dose of dark humor, the songs on this album traverse a wide landscape of musical genres, including blues, swing, klezmer, bossa nova, reggae, and more, and feature a variety of all-star guest vocalists. “New Waltz,” a song from Seth's 2015 album, No Words, was the Grand Prize winner of 2016 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC), sponsored by the Songwriters' Association of Washington (SAW).

Having graced some of DC's biggest stages (Strathmore, Wolf Trap, Merriweather Post Pavilion, the Birchmere, Blues Alley, the Fillmore, Hamilton Live, and Bethesda Blues & Jazz), Flo Anito recently embarked on her first European tour, performing solo in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain. A quirky, clever songwriter with a great big voice that is in turn, sweet, sultry, powerful, and emotive, Flo's stage presence is undeniable. Classically trained in voice, piano, and cello, raised on the stages of summer stock musical theatre, and studying Music under Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University, Flo has a sound that is a rare hybrid. A Grand Prize winner on Ourstage, with multiple Wammy nominations for Best Pop/Rock Vocalist, Flo Anito is wowing audiences internationally.

Seth Kibel Quintet is Seth plus Bob Abbott on double bass, Seth Lane on piano, drummer (TBA) and Flo Anito on vocals.
