About Chris & Kristen:
Chris Pumphrey and Kristen Toedtman met in the burgeoning improvised music scene in Baltimore City nearly twenty years ago. Pumphrey, “a vital performing and arranging presence in Baltimore” (Baltimore Sun) is a composer, arranger, bandleader and performer (alto saxophone, keyboards) known for years of full-throttle shows of the music of Fela Kuti, late night musical journeys with his Chris Pumphrey Sextet and monthly shows with The Mondawmen playing a mix of his original tunes and deep jazz cuts. Last spring, he played a sold out concert featuring the debut of his guitar songs. Toedtman is a singer, composer and choir director who has dedicated her musical life to lending her voice to projects as well as inspiring others to sing. She has performed as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and New World Symphony at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall and other venues, has sung on soundtracks (Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, Frozen, Godzilla, others) and she directs the Community Chorus of Peabody, where she gets to share her passion for the healing potentials and pleasures of singing. Now, together, with an urgency to delve deeper, the two are combining their talents and instruments to seek higher. Two guitars, two voices, harmonium, violin and percussion, bringing and honing all their gifts, singing and harmonizing in small gatherings, listening rooms, concert halls and church services, with a purpose to create space for meditation, introspection, spiritual exploration and healing. The music emerging has an earthy quality: songs of Chris’ as well as songs from the traditions of various indigenous cultures from North and South America.
