Dominic Smith & The B.A.D. Trio featuring Bob Butta and Amy Shook LIVE

“Dominic Smith & The B.A.D. Trio - A Tribute To Wynton Kelly”
Dominic Smith, drums
Bob Butta, piano
Amy Shook, bass

Join us for a tribute to one of the all-time greats: Jazz Pianist Wynton Kelly, who was famous for his tenure in the Miles Davis Quintet as well as for his own trio which he led through the 60’s. This trio with bassist Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb was captured on many classic recordings with Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson and many others, some of which were recorded at the Famous Ballroom here in Baltimore organized by the Left Bank Jazz Society.

Pianist Bob Butta has been an in-demand sideman, soloist and accompanist on the D.C./Baltimore jazz scene for many years and is always guaranteed to swing hard and take no prisoners. Bob is a “jazz musician’s musician” having absorbed the history of Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, and Thelonious Monk among others. Bob has worked with Sonny Fortune, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Curtis Fuller, Gary Bartz, Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Clifford Jordan, Buster Williams, Eddie Daniels, Stanley Turrentine, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Woody Shaw, Johnny Coles and Wallace Roney as well as countless local musicians.

Bassist Amy Shook is one of the most in-demand acoustic bassists in the mid-Atlantic, coveted for her huge sound and infectious, driving groove. In addition to being a premier performing and recording artist, a multi-instrumentalist (acoustic bass, electric bass, violin, viola, and cello), she is an accomplished composer, and her personality truly comes through in her writing. Amy co-leads the all-women powerhouse trio the 3D Jazz Trio (3Divas), with drummer Sherrie Maricle and pianist Jackie Warren and also the Shook/Russo 4tet, a band she started in 2004 with her husband, tenor saxophonist Pat Shook, and drummer Frank Russo. Drummer Dominic Smith has been a fixture on the jazz scene for more than 30 years, playing with the cream of the crop of local players as well as visiting musicians from New York and elsewhere. Dominic has appeared as a sideman on more than 50 recordings. His hard-swinging groove, use of dynamics and rhythmic subtleties have been utilized by such jazz notables as Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, James Williams, Charlie Byrd, Phil Woods, Gary Thomas, Jim Snidero, Kenny Rankin, Dennis Irwin, Ray Bryant, Keter Betts, Charles McPherson and George Garzone to name a few.
