Bartholomew Shields received the 2017 Garth Newel Music Center’s Emerging Artist Fellowship Program. one of 11 chosen from over 100 applicants. Chamber music has always been a highlight for him, leading to many years of advanced study with members of the Jupiter, Ceruti, Pro Arte, and Parker String Quartets, as well as the Garth Newel Piano Quartet. In 2017-2018, Bartholomew was appointed the violinist of the Perlman Piano Trio of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Perlman Piano Trio is an auditioned, scholarship-awarded piano trio composed of two undergraduate violin and cello players and a graduate piano player.

Mr. Shields is very grateful for his time studying violin intensely with world-renowned violinist Sally Thomas, of the Juilliard School, with whom he traveled weekly to NYC to study.

Mr. Shields has received numerous awards for his violin playing. He won first prize in the intermediate division of the Beethoven Club’s 2015 Young Artist Competition in Memphis, and the 2014 Helen T. Carp Distinguished Service Award from the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, in recognition of five years of outstanding and dedicated service to the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, in which he was principal second violinist during the 2013-2014 season.

Bartholomew was born in Reading Pennsylvania and began playing the violin at the age of 8 years old. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied with Soh-Hyun Park Altino. After completing this degree, he went on to study at a two-year Bible Truth and Church Service Fellowship Program in Anaheim. Currently, he is earning his Masters of Music in Violin Performance at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, studying under Judith Ingolfsson, winner of the Gold Medal of the prestigious Indianapolis International Violin Competition of 1998.
