Special Feature: Jane Jin Kaisen, “Community of Parting”

March 4 - April 10, 2022

The Critical Responses to Anti-Asian Violence (CRAAV) Initiative has partnered with the Center for Advanced Media Studies to bring internationally-renowned artist Jane Jin Kaisen as artist-in-residence to Baltimore and feature her multi-media artwork at the SNF Parkway Theatre.

Jane Jin Kaisen (born 1980 in Jeju Island, lives in Copenhagen) is a visual artist, filmmaker, and Professor at the School of Media Arts, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She is known for her visually striking, multilayered, performative, poetic, and multi-voiced feminist works through which past and present are brought into relation. Her artistic practice spans mediums of video installation, narrative experimental film, photographic installation, performance, and text. Her work shows how lived experience and embodied knowledge intersect with larger transnational political histories, among others the Korean War and division, the Jeju April Third Massacre, gender marginalization, and transnational adoption.

Critical Responses to Anti-Asian Violence (CRAAV) is a scholarly and community-oriented initiative to build anti-racist coalitions across Johns Hopkins University and Baltimore. It takes anti-Asian violence as a site at which to develop intersectional frameworks to engage the heterogenous challenges facing AAPI communities and interrogate the effects of white supremacy on academic knowledge produced about minoritized communities. CRAAV, an interdisciplinary initiative at JHU founded by Erin Chung (Political Science), Clara Han (Anthropology) and H. Yumi Kim (History), launched in Fall 2021 with the generous support of SNF Agora Institute's Faculty Grants Program.
