Guy Davis

Guy Davis

A guitarist, singer, actor and writer, Guy Davis travels the world keeping acoustic blues alive. Opening is A Little Bit A Blues with Warner Williams, one of the last true blues songsters.

Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Conan O’Brien” or nationally syndicated radio programs such as Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Mountain Stage,” or David Dye’s, “World Café,” in front of 15,000 people at a major festival, or teaching an intimate gathering of students at a music camp, Guy feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’. His ‘all’ is the blues in its many forms and incarnations.

Though raised in the New York City area, Davis grew up hearing accounts of life in the rural south from his parents and especially his grandparents, and they made their way into his songs. Davis taught himself the guitar and learned by listening to other musicians. Davis has had overlapping interests in music and acting. Eventually, Davis had the opportunity to combine music and acting on the stage. He made his Broadway musical debut in 1991 in the Zora Neale Hurston/Langston Hughes collaboration “Mulebone,” which featured the music of Taj Mahal. Guy has been nominated for nine W.C Handy Awards over the years, including for “Best Traditional Blues Album,” “Best Blues Song and as “Best Acoustic Blues Artist” two times.

Born in Maryland in 1930, Piedmont-style singer and guitarist Warner Williams is often referred to as a "songster" for the breadth of styles, sources, and songs he is able to perform, but he prefers the term "Guitar Man." As Nick Spitzer, host to Public Radio’s American Routes says of Warner, "Indeed, Warner Williams the guitar man brings consummate playing to his eclectic repertoire, complete with unexpected jazz chords, jaunty single-string work, ragtime strums, and basic Piedmont finger-picking -- all complementing his warm, gravelly voice." Here, he is joined by Jay Summerour on harmonica and Eric Selby on percussion for their A Little Bit A Blues project
