With a 50-year career that’s included stints with Roy Haynes and Pharoah Sanders, and co-founding the Amnesia Express with Gil Scott-Heron, Carl Cornwell is a veteran saxophonist still performing high-energy post-bop contemporary jazz with blues and Latin influences. Carl was the featured saxophonist with the Washington DC-based Project Natale from 2002 until the untimely death of the Project’s co-leader, Joseph F. Natale, in 2020. Known in the 90s for his compositions and performances with his progressive jazz ensemble UNIT CIRCLE – a spin-off from the Amnesia Express – he earned grants for piano performance and jazz composition from the Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artists Program.
