Receptions: Wednesday September 17 from 12:30–2pm | Thursday October 10 from 5:30–8pm

To Whom It May Concern exhibition at Stevenson University features faculty member Kari Miller and her daughter Ani Miller in a collaborative project exploring disability history, visibility and its lasting impact on individuals and families.

///

To Whom It May Concern is a two-part exhibition. The first part explores the history of institutionalizing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Maryland with the focus on Rosewood Training School in Owings Mills, Maryland. Rosewood was the first institution in Maryland to focus on training and schooling children with intellectual disabilities and was in operation from 1889 – 2009. Kari Miller uses historical images and research to give a visual representation of the impact Rosewood had on individual lives. This portion of the exhibit includes sculpture, prints and audio interviews. Stevenson University’s Owings Mills North and East (Athletic Fields) campuses are located on the former site of the Rosewood Training School.

The second part of the exhibition brings the historical impact to present-day experiences that have impacted the Miller family and other families with disabled children and family members. Exploring the often time hidden ableism in everyday interactions, experiences and institutions, Miller pushes the audience to consider how the history of institutionalization has caused a culture that reduces the value and worth of individuals. Working together, mother and daughter created large colorful prints and paintings giving visibility to Ani’s abilities, personality and personhood. The prints are representation of open letters calling into discussion comments and experiences in everyday life. This part of the exhibition contains prints and artists' books.

To Whom It May Concern opens August 25 and runs through November 15, 2025. The exhibition location is the Manning Academic Center 2nd Floor Gallery. Receptions planned for this installation are Wednesday September 17 from 12;30-2pm and Thursday October 9 5:30 pm to 8 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturdays 11am – 4pm.
