Making its début at Germano's, the Baltimore-based Black Orchid Duo is reimagining the sound of contemporary American stage music and 1940s jazz for a small, intimate venue. The Black Orchid Duo is the result of a collaboration between vocalist Sherry Benedek (Purple Light Theatre Company, Red Branch Theatre Company) and pianist Alexandre Abdoulaev (Butler Parks Hot Serenaders, Ghosts of Weimar).

The program presented reflects many facets of the contemporary American musical experience, incorporating theatre works of Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Cole Porter, and Ricky Ian Gordon, while also exploring the somewhat less traditional repertoire rooted in traditional Americana and 1940s and 1950s jazz. The evening's repertoire runs the gamut from the ridiculous to the poignant, exploring themes of love, loss, and closure.
