The Collective with special guest ClancyWorks Dance Company presents a concert of original choreography on Saturday, May 2nd at 7:00pm and Sunday, May 3rd at 3:00pm at Baltimore’s Theatre Project. Founded in 1999, The Collective is Baltimore’s hub for professional dancers and choreographers as a 501(c)(3) dance company with fourteen company members currently under the co-direction of Sonia Synkowski and Jessica Fultz. The Collective is in residence at the Bryn Mawr School where they offer bi-weekly dance classes that are open to the public. The Washington Post has described Adrienne Clancy, as a “wizard of invention,” and her choreography as “a tour de force of unpredictable partnering” brought to the stage through her work as the artistic director of ClancyWorks Dance Company. Now in their eleventh season as a 501(c)3 dance company, ClancyWorks presents national and local performances; conducts numerous workshops to participants of all ages and all levels of ability at national conferences, universities, public and private schools K-12; participates in and facilitates panel discussions; adjudicates the work of emerging artists; and coaches youth artists as performers, educators and choreographers. This concert highlights the rich history of collaboration between ClancyWorks Dance Company and The Collective as they return to Baltimore’s Theatre Project for the fourth consecutive season in a shared performance. Both dance companies are dedicated to presenting new, relevant work in the Baltimore/Washington area that is both accessible and engaging.
About the show: As thinking beings, we are constantly driven to re-evaluate situations in order to find new approaches. Influenced by our relationships and our surroundings, a need to "re-wire" or "re-do" certain aspects of our life is appealing. As artists, The Collective and special guest ClancyWorks Dance Company have created a collection of dance works entitled [re]wired: dances that re-examine perspective and re-energize the spirit through their innovative approach to contemporary dance.
About the work:
- goodbye: In her final season with The Collective, Lauren Withhart pays tribute to her dancing family of 10 years.
- Human/Being: Collective Member Kevin Truitt explores an environment in which individuals strive to find a sense of belonging and create unity using their own personal strengths.
- You’ve come a long way, baby?: Adrienne Kraus Latanishen of The Collective creates a male gaze caricature of women's progression through life while inspecting how far feminism has really progressed itself.
- Kindred: Jessica Fultz, Collective Co-Director, takes the audience on a journey through the defining moments in life that serve to alter or remind us of what is essential or preservable.
- [untitled message]: Sonia Synkowski, Collective Co-Director, creates a reflective and somewhat humorous solo focusing on the role and joy of dancing in your “middle age”.
- This is Not a Men's Dance: Lynne Price (The Collective) boldly examines and challenges the current state women's rights, the female body, and the language used to talk about these.
ClancyWorks brings to Baltimore, CATCHING DREAMS, showcasing a union of both literal dreams, as in a dream one has had, and also as a dream one aspires to hold. This latest work of Clancy's asks us to think about the dreams we had, held, and have yet to realize – leaving evidence of its presence on the dance floor.
ClancyWorks’ The Art of Letting Go reveals the mountains and valleys of a complex relationship, built on an edgy foundation. It asks the question: What magnetizes an individual to be drawn towards or repelled by another? Conversations from the heart unravel through “gravity defying moves, creative lifts and intricately woven phrases...Gestures distill thoughts”- The Washington Post.
