The Grand Opening of the ReNEWable ARTifacts Gallery

Artist Ed Gross opens his ReNEWable ARTifacts Gallery in Highlandtown!

"I moved into the Crown Cork and Seal Complex in 2003 and have produced a large inventory of work which I had scattered everywhere in my large studio. I had shows from time to time and people love the studio and the whole industrial complex, but viewing my work was not an easy process. And it was not a conducive environment to sell much. I had decided that this is the year to begin to market my work in earnest, instead of just working all the time which is my desire. Well low and behold, I met Michael Metcalf , who is an amazing visionary artist and a jack of all trades. Michael began working with me after the first of the year and now the space has turned into a gallery."

About the Artist

Ed Gross is a visionary artist working in metal. He uses found objects that he repurposes into both decorative and functional art. He is the winner of a 2014b-grant from the Baker Foundation. His work will be exhibited along with other Baker award winners at the Baltimore Museum of Art, September 16 –November 15, 2015.

The timeworn beauty of the old farm implements and metal that Gross hascollected over 25 years helps form the vision for his work. He gives these objectsnew life while preserving their integrity. He also loves the hunt, scouring the countryside and urban junkyards in search of materials.

The beauty that lies beneath the rust and grime of these objects is what captivateshim. The stories that accompany these discoveries are often as intriguing as theparts themselves, finding their way into his sculptures.

Gross works out of a large industrial studio at the Crown, Cork and Seal Complex in Baltimore’s Highlandtown. His workspace houses a collection of thousands of parts and materials that he has collected. He has just completed a new gallery in his studio where all his work is on display in a very unique space.

Gross was born in 1939 in New York City. He began making art in earnest after retiring from a long, illustrious career as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. As a meteorologist, he helped develop one of the first air pollution warning systems for the USA and co-created the first national TV weather show, AM Weather. He was also active in the founding of the Weather Channel in 1982.

Throughout the 1990’s Gross travelled the world, working on natural disaster reduction for the National Weather Service and the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva. In 2000, he was named a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

He lives in Baltimore with his wife, Linda. He is passionate about collaborating with other artists. He welcomes studio visits and commissions.
