Mt. Vernon & Washington Monument: Monumental City Tour

Mt. Vernon & Washington Monument: Monumental City Tour

July 4, 2015 is the 200th anniversary of the dedication of Baltimore's Washington Monument. Visit the museum in the base of the monument before climbing the stairs to enjoy a view that can only appreciated from the top of the monument. After descending you will learn about the Mount Vernon neighborhood. Mount Vernon was the height of fashion during the Gilded Age. Learn about railroad millionaires, the origin of American philanthropy, and the pioneering role the area took in urban development. The Washington Monument stands out in Baltimore’s skyline as a reminder of our early industrial heritage and is a must-see for visitors and locals alike!

Our new Monumental City tours are guided walks exploring iconic Baltimore landmarks in Downtown, Jonestown, Mount Vernon and Patterson Park every Sunday from April through November. Our Jonestown tour is organized in partnership with the Carroll Museums. Support for this tour series is provided by the Baltimore National Heritage Area and Maryland Heritage Area Authority.
