Twenty innovative mixed-media fiber works demonstrate Elizabeth Talford Scott’s belief in artmaking’s ability to offer people an opportunity to break free of social limitations, evolve new ways of communicating, and nurture dreams. Her works innovate the practice of quilting by incorporating unconventional objects such as stones, buttons, and sequins in heavily layered surfaces.

Elizabeth Talford Scott (1916-2011) was an internationally recognized, Baltimore-based artist known for her fiber work, specifically quilting. Having grown up in South Carolina with 13 siblings and parents who were sharecroppers, she was taught how to quilt from a young age as a way to upcycle materials into something beautiful and functional.

Stitched Memories: Celebrating Elizabeth Talford Scott invites visitors to experience the artworks of Elizabeth Talford Scott (1916–2011). A Baltimore quilt artist, Talford Scott used quilts and other textiles to tell stories and to preserve memories.

The Howard County Arts Council's annual Resident Visual Artists Exhibit showcases recent artwork by artists with studios at the Center for the Arts: Phill Branch, Kassamira Carter-Howard (Emerging Resident Studio Artist), Sara Engel, Sherry Jankiewicz, Myungsook Ryu Kim, Diana Marta, Lisa Scarbath, Jereme Scott, Asma Ahmed Shikoh, Andrei Trach, Jamie Travers, Mary Jo Tydlacka, and David Zuccarini. Unfolding: Dualities features the artwork of John Chang and Jeffrey Repko. By invoking calligraphic forms, Chang’s paintings comment on the distortion of language and reclaim the energy of the written word. Repko’s sculptures investigate the idea of function through a dialogue between traditional techniques and contemporary technologies. Tiona Nekkia McClodden’s genre-defying work, Play Me Home (2021), is a four-channel video with sound and sculptural objects (two horns, a leather-bound script, and seeds) blending narrative fiction and nonfiction. This installation reflects the Philadelphia-based artist’s three-year journey of delving into her family history and funerary traditions in the South.
