Columbia Pro Cantare: Sing Democracy 2026

Columbia Pro Cantare will join in the celebration of America's 250th in a concert on May 2, 2026, 8 pm at the Jim Rouse Theatre. The concert, “Sing Democracy 250!”, features two works commissioned by the nationwide Together in Hope project: “Redeem the Dream’ and “US.” The chorus is under the direction of Laura Lee Fischer.
“Redeem the Dream,” composed by Brandon A. Boyd, is based on the Langston Hughes’ poem, “Let America Be America Again,” which reflects the gap between the ideals of American democracy and the reality for many people in U.S. history. “US,” composed by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, is based on Richard Haass’ book, “The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens.” “US” contains quotes from a diverse group of Americans—from the Founding Fathers to the current generation—that explain the obligations of citizens and how they have been practiced over the years. Both works call citizens to reflect on America’s history and to commit to work together to renew American democracy in the present day.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by the full chorus and the Columbia Pro Cantare Chamber Singers, complete the program. A preconcert lecture at 7 pm will provide insight into the works, and the concert will be followed by a reception.
Tickets are $25 (adults), $20 (students and senior citizens) in advance, $2 more at the door. Children 15 and under: $10. Group rates available. Visit www.procantare.org or call 310.854.0107 to order tickets.
