It’s Friday the 13th, the start of Valentine’s Day weekend, and a perfect time to ask that coworker out to an after-work happy hour. Maryland Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts has put together an early-evening selection of area talent to help set the mood.

THE JENNIFERS (John Irvine, Joe Stone, Ed Wade and Skizz Cyzyk): The Big Takeover’s Jack Rabid put the most recent Jennifers album on his Best 100 LPs of the year list. His magazine says, “These guys have strong melodies, hooks galore, and the interesting rhythmic push and pull of early XTC – all a winning combination for connoisseurs.” Mobtown Shank’s Benn Ray says, “This goes down as one of the best Baltimore records of all time. Classic guitar pop. There is not a clunker on the whole record. And each time you listen you find a different song that works its way under your skin.” City Paper’s Aaron Pinto says, “Just when you’re convinced they’re a product of the British Invasion, they seamlessly drop post-punk Bowery rhythms on you. And that’s a good thing… the lovechild of the Kinks and Television… a lean and well-oiled guitar-driven machine, churning out infectiously catchy melodies and perfect chord changes like it’s nothing… one of the best bands in Baltimore.” http://thejennifers.com/

POP DEATH: Three Baltimore guys and their drum machine named John genesised to make music at the intersection of Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, Talking Heads, and Hole. They started off playing furniture stores and haven’t progressed much since. You can listen to their discography, which includes the LPsBumptious and Inchoate, here: www.soundcloud.com/pop-death

NICK HOPE: With beats that range from tender to furious and a croon that can match with the best of ‘em, Nick Hope is an electroacoustic songster that makes Baltimore proud. Check out some of his tunes here: http://nickhope.bandcamp.com/
