Discovering Vilen Giterman’s Painting Style

January 30 – April 15, 2023

A reception will take place on Friday, March 24 between 4:00-6:00pm.

The Exhibition Department at Stevenson University is pleased to announce the 2023 spring exhibition in its School of Design Lobby gallery. Discovering Vilen Giterman’s Painting Style is an installation showcasing an Ukranian Immigrant’s painting and drawing portfolio. Giterman was a member of the Ukraine Artist League. He immigrated to the United States in 1999. This exhibition celebrates Mr. Giterman’s creative spirit. He died on March 4, 2022.

The “discovering” of Giterman’s painting style started in late December of 2021. The Exhibitions Department visited Giterman’s home. Due to illness, Giterman’s ex-wife, Olga Chala, discussed his artwork. Giterman’s aesthetics are influenced by Post-Impressionist and early Modernist painters, notably Cezanne, and Renoir. After immigrating to Pikesville, MD, he began to interpret his new environments using folk art motifs. This exhibition pairs these two styles for comparison and discovery.

The School of Design Lobby Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm and on Saturday from 11am to 4pm. Stevenson University School of Design Lobby Gallery is located on the Owings Mills North campus, 11100 Ted Herget Way (Formally Gundry Lane), Owings Mills, MD 21117.
