As our bodies move, we tell a story. Where we have been, where we are going, what we hold on to, what we let go of. When bodies move in masses, they tell a larger story. Hope, fear, war, famine, the search for a better life. What does it mean to be just one body moving in humanity’s great crowd? This is a movement piece. Prepare to be moved.

Considered by many to be the greatest play ever written, Hamlet is everything Shakespeare wrote distilled to a single play. Funny, thrilling, and heartbreaking, Hamlet is a tour de force. It has represented many things to many people, and stands as shorthand for “Theatre.” Strip away the pretense, though, and what’s left is still a masterpiece. We present it in original pronunciation, as audiences first heard it.
When Center Stage theater moved into the former Loyola College and High School on Calvert Street in Mt. Vernon, the building had been vacant for decades. The Catholic school was built in 1899 to fill out a campus owned by the religious order the Society of Jesus, which previously had erected St. Ignatius Church at the corner of Madison and Calvert Streets and needed more space than its basement could provide to offer schooling for Catholic youth. The high school and college occupied the site until 1922, when they split into separate institutions and moved out.
