Annapolis Symphony Orchestra seeks Box Office and Marketing Manager

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

TYPE: Full-time, exempt

HOURS: M-F, 9:30-5:30 Occasional evenings and weekends

JOB SUMMARY: The Box Office and Marketing Manager is responsible for overseeing ticket sales and marketing for ASO concerts and events. The Box Office and Marketing Manager ensures prompt, courteous, and professional services to all ASO customers and patrons while generating excitement and “buzz” throughout the community. This position is ideal for a box office and marketing professional to score big career wins by transforming the ticketing revenues and marketing performance of high-quality, successful performing arts organization that is too often called a “hidden gem.” This position’s purpose is to bring us out of hiding, create buzz, and convert the buzz to revenue. The Symphony has a 71% subscription rate—double the national average—with plenty of room to grow in an affluent community that is justly proud of its arts and culture scene.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Box Office Management:

Manage day-to-day operation of ASO Box Office

Sustain and grow the Symphony’s reputation for unmatched customer service for subscribers, patrons, and inquirers

Ensure that box office and administrative phone lines are answered promptly

Implement efficient and professional policies and procedures that ensure the highest level of customer service to the general public for all box office and donor services

Supervise subscription renewal and acquisition campaign. Oversee ticket sales operations

Maintain Patron Manager ticketing database with close attention to detail and accuracy

Develop and execute strategies for group sales and tourist packages

Work with third-party vendors on ticketing promotions

Work with public and private schools to encourage group sales and provide seamless support for all aspects of ASO Education Concerts

Meet or exceed revenue goals for subscription and single-ticket sales and house occupancy

Prepare weekly and monthly reports on sales and revenue

Marketing:

Develop a comprehensive, detailed, and deliverable multi-channel marketing strategy for the Symphony

Work proactively and publicly in the community to promote the Symphony and seek out productive marketing, promotion, and sales partnerships

Create and execute advertising and promotional campaigns to raise awareness, sell subscriptions, sell single tickets, and expand audiences

Develop and execute a vibrant electronic and social media strategy to communicate with current audiences, promote sales and philanthropy, and reach new audiences

Maintain engaging, accurate, and timely content on Symphony website

Oversee development of printed collateral to support awareness, sales, and fundraising

Oversee production of concert program book, collaborating with other Symphony staff

Update print and online event listings in local media

Create, coordinate, and implement targeted marketing for specific performances and events

Work with General Manager to gather high quality marketing content from visiting artists

Work with Executive Director to develop effective marketing metrics, review effectiveness of marketing channels, and report to board

Write press releases for concerts, educational programs, and Symphony news, and redeploy material for electronic and social distribution

Work creatively and collaboratively with outsourced services on production of marketing materials and campaigns

Work creatively and collaboratively with volunteer board members, including a Marketing and Audience Development Committee, in shaping the Symphony’s marketing strategies

Create and monitor Symphony’s marketing budgets

Work with volunteers and staff to have a Symphony presence at relevant public events

Other duties as assigned

Concert Duties:

Open Box Office 2 hours before each (evening) concert

Assist in operation of ASO rehearsals, concerts, and special events

Coordinate volunteers in office, at concerts, and events

Occasional evening and weekend work

Duties as assigned

Other:

Assist in staff operations of ASO rehearsals, concerts, and events wherever needed

Maintain office files

Other duties as assigned by Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in marketing, business administration, or other relevant field

3-5 years’ patron services experience in a performing arts organization

Ability to provide unexcelled customer service

Demonstrated ability to meet and exceed revenue and performance metrics

3-5 years’ experience in multi-channel marketing

Ability to create and execute strategic and tactical marketing plans with appropriate metrics

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Interest in working with a classical symphony orchestra, and willingness to learn about classical music

Ability to think through projects and their ramifications, and to plan work in advance

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel

Ability to learn and use new software

Pleasant, outgoing, engaging manner on telephone and in person

Additional Qualifications Desired or Helpful:

Knowledge of, and passion for, classical music

Experience with Patron Manager, Salesforce, or other CRM database

Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and additional graphic design software

Experience with QuickBooks

Web development or maintenance skills

Proficiency with social media

Experience and aptitude for planning special events

Experience with non-profit fundraising

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is a growing, successful 501(c)(3) not-for profit organization. Founded 1962, it is a fully-professional orchestra with approximately twenty-four performances each year. The core of the season is five Masterworks concerts (two performances each) and one repeat performance at Strathmore Music Center. Additionally there are two Pops concerts, five concerts for schoolchildren and families, and several collaborative performances with the Annapolis Opera, the US Naval Academy Glee Clubs, and other organizations. Music Director José-Luis Novo is in his thirteenth season, the longest-service music director of the Annapolis Symphony. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts is the home of the Symphony.

Starting Date: September 5 or earlier preferred. Relocation expenses not reimbursed.
