2016 BSO Academy Week Internships

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra seeks motivated individuals for the following internships for our 2016 BSO Academy Week. These internships offer college students and aspiring arts administrators excellent opportunities to learn about the operations of a symphony orchestra and get first-hand experience with one of the BSO’s flagship educational programs.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. Interns will be responsible for their own housing and transportation.

All details and duties are subject to change.

  • Supervisor: Johnnia Stigall, Education Program Coordinator
  • Compensation: Benefits include free parking, complimentary BSO tickets as available, some meals during the Academy Week, and modest stipend and/or college credit.

  • Events & Logistic Intern
  • Operations Intern
  • Personnel Intern

Internship Term:

June 6 – June 25, 2016

Hours:

  • Preparation Week 1 (June 6-10): 20 hours
  • Preparation Week 2 (June 13-17): 20 hours
  • Academy Week (June 18-25): 40 hours
    • During the Academy Week (June 18-25) applicants must be available at all times including evenings and weekends.

Artistic & Education Intern

The main responsibility of this role is to assist program artistic faculty, artistic consultants, conductors, and guest speakers/clinicians. This position also provides administrative support to the Academy Music Educator Track and Arts Administrator Track.

The Artistic & Education Intern must also have excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of professionalism, and impeccable attention to detail.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with coordination of scheduling and requests of Academy artistic faculty and instructors for the Music Educator Track and Arts Administrator Track
  • Assist with artistic details and logistics of Academy masterclasses and BSO musician faculty presentations
  • All Academy interns will also assist with the day-to-day logistics of the Academy Week including preparing registration materials, preparing rooms for rehearsals and classes, and other duties as assigned.

Events & Logistics Intern

The primary responsibility of this role is to assist with the coordination and execution of special events, concerts, and provided meals during the Academy Week.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the coordination of a special event for approximately 150 BSO musicians and Academy participants including managing the RSVP list and coordinating dietary restrictions
  • Assist with details and logistics of Academy lunches, dinners, and post-concert receptions
  • Provide front-of-house assistance for the four concerts during the Academy Week
  • All Academy interns will also assist with the day-to-day logistics of the Academy Week including preparing registration materials, preparing rooms for rehearsals and classes, and other duties as assigned.

Operations Intern

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide operations and production support for the events and activities of the Academy Week. Position may require lifting of up to 15 lbs.

  • Assist with Academy class and concert operations including coordinating room setups, stage plots for Academy large ensembles and small chamber ensembles, A/V equipment needs, large percussion equipment needs, and facility scheduling
  • Stage duties as needed and backstage assistance for concerts outside of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall
  • Assist with daily Academy transportation coordination
  • All Academy interns will also assist with the day-to-day logistics of the Academy Week including preparing registration materials, preparing rooms for rehearsals and classes, and other duties as assigned.

Personnel Intern

The primary responsibility of this role is to assist with personnel management for the 100+ Academy Week participants and BSO musician faculty members.

The Personnel Intern must also have excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of professionalism, and experience in an orchestral setting as a musician or administrator.

  • Serve as personnel manager for the Academy Large Ensembles (String Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensembles, Percussion Ensemble), 12+ small chamber music ensembles, and the Academy Chamber Orchestra
  • Serve as a liaison between the Academy ensembles, faculty, and staff
  • Assist with participant personnel management for the two full side-by-side orchestras
  • Assist with coordinating and updating rosters for participant seating and program listings
  • Stage duties as needed
  • All Academy interns will also assist with the day-to-day logistics of the Academy Week including preparing registration materials, preparing rooms for rehearsals and classes, and other duties as assigned.

About the BSO Academy Week

The week-long BSO Academy brings together passionate adult instrumental musicians from all over the United States for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Academy participants play side-by-side with the BSO in rehearsals and performances, and experience master classes, lectures, chamber music coachings, and sectionals led by orchestra members and experts in the field. The Academy provides an immersive experience for adult non-professional musicians who desire an intensive learning experience.

Qualifications:

Previous musical experience or interest either as an administrator or performer is preferred. Strong verbal, written, and organization skills are required. Must be able to handle organizational and communication aspects of the position in a positive, professional, and timely manner. Computer proficiency with knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, willingness to learn, a supreme attention to detail, and a sense of creativity are highly valued qualities.
