Evergreen’s new major exhibition, A History of Houseplants, explores the forces that sparked the Victorian obsession with houseplants, reveals how the trend manifested at Evergreen and in Baltimore, and examines how today’s houseplant enthusiasts both recall and differ from the Victorians of 150 years ago.
On view October 1, 2022-June 4, 2023. Gallery open Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4p.m. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
Admission is FREE and no advance registration is necessary.

Edgar Allan Poe famously proclaimed the death of a beautiful woman "the most poetical subject in the world." The prolonged suffering of his beautiful, dying wife, Virginia Poe, almost certainly inspired this belief. Virginia Poe remains one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures in the famed author's history. Join us for a series of live readings, themed discussion, and Q&A about the famed muse, poetess, child bride and daughter of Baltimore.
The annual Phi Beta Kappa lecture titled “Doing Science in the Early Modern Kitchen: Women, Recipes, and Knowledge Making” with Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Wendy Wall, the Avalon Professor of the Humanities, Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence, and professor of English at Northwestern University.
The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Ola Belle Reed: I’ve Endured, an exhibition that explores the life and work of nationally recognized bluegrass musician Ola Belle Reed, contextualizing her achievements within a history of migration from rural Appalachia north in the twentieth century.
Join the Reginald F. Lewis Museum for a double film feature examining the origins of Afrofuturism and discovering what it takes to keep Black love in the future. A post discussion with filmmakers Alexis Aggrey, Jamal Gray and Denai “B Fly” Nixon will follow.
Rise with a Purpose is a 501c3 non-profit providing assistance to the homeless, social reform, community-based music projects & cultural exchange programs. Songwriter, Poet, Actor & BSO Artistic Partner, Wordsmith, will be opening up a new music school and moving his non profit into the historic Harlem Theater off North Gilmore Street between 2023-2024.
In February 1904, Baltimore’s chief firefighter cabled Washington DC: “Desperate fire here. Must have help at once!” A tremendous fire was sweeping through downtown and showed little signs of stopping. Not until 5:00 p.m. the next day was the fire brought under control. Overall, it destroyed 1500 buildings, left 35,000 people unemployed, and damaged $150 million of property. Resilient Baltimore rebounded quickly, erecting new buildings, widening streets, and improving fire safety designs.

Featuring Esther Krinitz's Holocaust survival story exquisitely told through 36 hand-embroidered works, this exhibition pays tribute to humanity's long history, past and current, of unjustly persecuted innocents and the dream of a world at peace. A preamble to Esther's fabric collages include South African Truth and Reconciliation embroidered testimonies, work gathered from Lily Yeh's partnership with Rwandan Tutsi genocide survivors, and more.
BNHA 3rd Annual History Through Arts Competition
The Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) invites Baltimore City youth to participate in our 3rd Annual History Through Arts Competition. The purpose of this contest is to engage City youth in an art exhibit showcasing their unique talents while also expressing their view of life in Baltimore City. The expectation is that the artwork will reflect Baltimore’s historic people, places, significant architecture or represent a historical event.

Three members of the African American Quilters of Baltimore, Sandra Smith, Rosalind Robinson, and Glenda Richardson, have created quilts to thank and honor all those who supported the Peale’s renovations and reopening this year. This exhibition presents more of their work at the Peale from December 3-January 8, 2023.
Who are Marylanders, why are they so obsessed with their flag, and what does duckpin bowling have to do with the Baltimore Orioles? This exhibition explores how Maryland and its people have changed since its founding in 1634. Learn how the dynamic geography of the state drove its industry, population, and the identity of Marylanders, and how the arts and culture of Maryland reflect on its past. For traveling visitors and lifelong Marylanders, Discover Maryland shows there is much to uncover about Maryland. Open through March 2022.
Sheela Becton invites you to take a journey with her to India and experience the Colors of India brought to life on canvas. Exhibit is available September 8- October 14 at the Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House. A portion of sales from this exhibit will benefit HopeWorks Howard County. Gallery is open to the public M-F 9am-4:30pm but please call 410-730-3987 ahead of visit to make sure all areas are accessible.
