August in Baltimore

Executive Director's Letter
August 4, 2015

August in Baltimore--it’s hot and everyone else is at the beach. Oh, and how are you doing on that summer reading list?

On the up side, people are more indulgent of those out of office messages and the pace really does slow a bit as families leave town for that end-of-summer vacation. Soon enough we will be back to our old routines so take time to enjoy what the area has to offer during the last of the dog days. Germano's Cabaret has a great line up, there's a new play festival underway at Vagabond Theatre, Deep Vision Dance and Nicole Martinell are offering dance classes and you can check out Charlie Chaplin at the Jewish Museum of Maryland. The Inner Harbor? It’s always a good idea to check out the National Aquarium or visit the Lego Castle at Port Discovery.

And about that summer reading…. If you don’t have a list, there’s still time to make one that includes both the high intellect and fun. Mine includes revisiting Middlemarch by George Elliott; The Art of Possibility by conductor Benjamin Zander and family therapist and professional coach Rosemont Stone Zander; and a little Laura Lippman. The is also lots of great thought leadership writing around the topics of Baltimore, race, and culture including the Pitchfork piece by Lower Dens singer, Jana Hunter, and everything by Ta-Nehsi Coates.

For now and for later, some of my favorite blogs are Create Equity, You’ve Cott Mail,Barry’s Blog, and the not surprisingly irreverent Nonprofits with Balls.

Happy August,

Jeannie
