RUBYS Artist Update - Performing Arts - Brian Francoise

2015 performing arts grantee Brian Francoise has announced the debut of his Rubys-sponsored project to take place next month! COVENANTS, A Theatrical Collage About Northwood provides reflections about Baltimore’s race relations viewed through the prism of history as well as today’s current events. COVENANTS was community-sources with artistic input from residents of the six neighborhoods that make up the Greater Northwood Covenant Association in Northeast Baltimore. The interactive performance and dialogue explores the legacy of “block busting,” legal and de facto segregation, and racial covenants, helping to explain current inequalities in housing, health, education and economic opportunity, while also celebrating the personal stories of everyday residents.

The Rubys Artist Project Grant program was established by GBCA in 2013 to support the region’s gems - the local creative community of performing, visual, media and literary artists. Created with the vision and initial funding from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, the Rubys value art making at the idea stage and supports local artists here and now.
