Spring Brings Great New Things To Baltimore

Executive Director's Letter
March 29, 2016

Congratulations to the organizers of the inaugural Light City Baltimore, a new immersive festival of bright lights and big ideas. This free international, family-friendly festival features 29 large-scale original works of light art, including a piece from 2015 Mary Sawyers Baker Award winner and self taught artist, Paul Rucker. In addition to light art, Light City features more than 50 concerts, 100 performances, and an innovation conference called Light City U. For more information about Light City Baltimore, visit www.lightcity.org or connect via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #LightCity.

As we approach the April 5 deadline for voter registration and the April 26 primary election, how can you find out the Mayoral candidates position on arts and culture? Check out the Citizen Artist Baltimore website where you will find the CAB questionnaire responses from almost every leading candidate.

In other news, the Urban Arts Leader Program (UALP) has launched a blog and Facebook page that will document the professional training and development journey of the 2015/16 Urban Arts Leadership Fellows. UALP is a program of GBCA and was designed to increase the participation of groups that have been historically underrepresented, particularly those of color, in the management of cultural and artistic organizations. It is a pipeline for high achieving young leaders who have demonstrated a strong commitment to this goal.

Happy spring,

Jeannie

P.S. A special thank you to Deacon Vito Piazza, Sr. for an unforgettable tour of St. Mary’s Spiritual Center and Historic Site, a new member of GBCA. This beautiful, peaceful site is a wonderful destination for tours or events.
