Black History Month 2/20/18

February is Black History Month and is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.

Every week during February, the Urban Arts Leadership Program will share quotes from African American Icons.

“The cost of liberty is less than the price of repression.”
—W.E.B. Du Bois

“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”
—Desmond Tutu

“In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”
—Thurgood Marshall, first African American U.S. Supreme Court member
