Baltimore, Maryland is one of the few American cities that can claim to be the proud location for two thriving Historically Black Universities… Morgan State University to the east and Coppin State University in the western corridor if the city. This is a well-known fact, but not widely mentioned in a regular conversation about the Baltimore arts sector. Each institution of higher learning fosters the arts and immersive creativity through its majors, its coursework, and its curriculum. These universities matriculate scholars in an effort to position them as emerging leaders who, in turn, will fuel the city with fresh energy and innovative ideas.

Morgan and Coppin between them offer a variety of majors that are designed to educate creatives, as well as, those whose goal is to inform and guide a creative environment. These schools are underutilized resources. The Baltimore arts sector would do well to look to them as it grapples with issues of social justice, community engagement, and equitable funding.
