Executive Director’s Letter August 20, 1019

Yesterday, Mayor Jack Young presented the Key to the City to André De Shields. A Baltimore native, De Shields won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor for his performance as Hermes in Hades Town.

When De Shields won the award in June, he said "Baltimore, Maryland. Are you in the house? I hope you're watching at home because I am making good on my promise that I would come to NY and become someone you'd be proud to call your native son." He has indeed! Mayor Young also announced De Shields’ Central Scholarship Alumnus Award for his "demonstration of unparalleled tenacity and talent." He received a scholarship in 1964 when he was a senior at Baltimore City College.
