Executive Director Letter 3/1/22

It’s starting to feel like spring! Omicron is abating and the masks are coming off, but we are still proceeding with caution into the warmer weather. In venues, audiences can expect to continue to wear masks in most places, at least until April when many organizations expect to revisit their policies. It’s good to know that concern for the safety of visitors and staff remains paramount for cultural organizations.

News! GBCA is proud to welcome Dr. Kimberly Moffitt as its newest member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Moffitt is Interim Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, professor of Language, Literacy & Culture and affiliate professor of Africana Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Her teaching interests include culture, media studies/criticism, Black hair and body politics, sports and media, and popular culture. Dr. Moffitt’s research focuses on mediated representations of marginalized groups as well as the politicized nature of Black hair and the body.

Announcement! Good news, it’s not too late to apply for Urban Arts Leadership (UAL). The deadline for applications has been extended to Monday March 14. UAL is a fellowship designed to increase diversity in the management of cultural and artistic organizations by building a pipeline for high achieving emerging leaders of color. To support a full creative life for all, UAL commits to championing policies and practices of cultural equity that empower a just, inclusive, equitable nation. You can learn more and find the application at the GBCA website.

Correction! THE 1619 PROJECT: CONFRONTING HARD TRUTHS with Keynote Speaker Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story & Born On the Water) with moderator Martha S. Jones at The Enoch Pratt Free Library will take place both virtually and in-person on March 12 (not the 15th as previously reported). GBCA is a proud sponsor of this event. To learn more about this and other programming during the month-long celebration, visit the CityLit Project’s website.

As you continue to stay safe and care for one another, keep the people of Ukraine in your hearts.

My best,

Jeannie
