It’s always a pleasure when I can share some good news. In this case, it’s Artscape, baby! In a press release yesterday, Mayor Brandon Scott and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts (BOPA)announced the details that everyone has been eagerly awaiting. Artscape is returning Friday, September 22, to Sunday, September 24, 2023 for the first time since 2019, and it's going to be packed with activities and people. BOPA reports they received an overwhelming response with over 1,000 applications from artists, vendors, and organizations eager to be a part of this returning event.
This year, Artscape is expanding across North Avenue into the Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Festival goers will be able to explore the areas along North Avenue between Charles Street and Maryland Avenue, as well as Charles Street up to W. 20th Street. Singer, actress, and television personality Kelly Rowland will help kick things off as the headliner on Friday night.
In other great news, the Eubie Blake Cultural Center announced they will adopt Single Carrot Theatre’s education programs, which have served tens of thousands of youths over the years. With its mission to bring creative expression and cultural consciousness to Baltimore through visual, literary, culinary and performing arts education programs, The Eubie will take up and build upon Single Carrot Theatre's legacy of arts education in Baltimore, preserving the spirit of experiential learning and a student-centered approach to creativity and imagination that made SCT education programs so special.
Finally, GBCA is pleased to welcome Sarah Berns-Zieve as its new Marketing Assistant. Sarah Berns-Zieve aka BZ is an all-around artist with a passion for community. She was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, where she lives now.She is a videographer, editor, writer, and dancer. Also, she is the founder/director of The Arts Collective, a Baltimore City-based non-profit whose mission is to unify and transform community through the power of art. Overall, the aim of all she does is to create community in whatever way possible.
