Executive Director’s Letter July 17, 2018

Annnnd we’re back!

If it’s July and it’s hot in Baltimore, it must be Artscape weekend!

After a short hiatus, GBCA will be back onsite at Artscape. Come visit us, and other wonderful cultural organizations, on Mt Royal Avenue in the lot between Corpus Christi Church and Maryland Institute College of Art’s main building affectionately dubbed "Cultural Square." Also returning is GBCA’s Cultural Basket of Cheer. We're raffling off TWO baskets jam packed with creative items and experiences, all donated by GBCA members. No purchase necessary, just come on out and sign-up. We have many goodies to offer this year—including walking tours, concerts, painting classes, theatre subscriptions, t-shirts, and books. Many thanks to Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Jazz Alliance, Bach in Baltimore, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Baltimore Classical Guitar Society, Inc., Maryland Humanities, Creative Nomads, Everyman Theatre, and Cabaret at Germano's. We’ll be joined at the booth by our friends from Maryland Citizens for the Arts, who will have voter registration forms on hand if you need to sign up or update your address. If you have questions about who is eligible to vote, we will be there to help.

Speaking of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, congratulations to Donna Drew Sawyer who was recently named Chief Executive Officer. Donna has been a part of the BOPA team as its Chief of External Affairs since 2017, so she is sure to hit the ground running.

Congratulations also to Erick Antonio Benitez, winner of the 2018 Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize. Eric, whose work provides a moving commentary on immigration, received a Rubys Artist Grant in 2016.

If you are interested in applying for a 2018 Rubys Grant in Literary Arts or Visual Arts, the deadline to apply is July 31, 2018 at 11:59pm. The online application portal is open and may be accessed here. The final information session of the season will be held on Monday, July 23 at 6pm at the Motor House.

Here’s to water, sensible shoes, hats, and sunglasses! See you at Artscape :)
