It's Giving Tuesday!

Executive Director's Letter
December 2, 2014

It’s Giving Tuesday! In the season when we are flooded with consumerism, now is a great time to reconnect with your inner altruist and make a statement about what matters to you and your community. We encourage you to take a look at GBCA’s membership list, and consider a contribution to support the work of one or more of these incredible and worthy cultural organizations. From the bigs to the smalls and those in between, these are the folks that make the region a great place to live, work, and play.

I spent my Black Friday morning on a six mile hike of Druid Hill Park led by the Friends of Druid Hill Park and in support of the Park’s Farmer’s Market. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out GBCA member Baltimore Green Map’s beautiful and informative map of the area.

As part of our commitment to building sustainability skills, this Saturday December 6, GBCA is hosting an Artists U/Baltimore grantwriting overview led by founder Andrew Simonet. This will be immediately followed by a Grantmakers Fair. The Fair is meant to be an (almost) one-stop shop where you can speak directly with staff responsible for the Baker Artist Awards, Rubys Artist Project Grants, Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts' Creative Baltimore Fund, PNC Transformative Art Prize and Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize, as well as The Contemporary’s Grit Fund and the Maryland State Art Council's Individual Artist Award Program. It’s a great chance to gather intelligence from the organizations managing local grants and awards. Note to artists: both the Rubys Media and Performing Arts round and the Baker Artist Awards site are now open for submissions.

And don’t forget that the The DeVos Institute of Arts Management, in partnership with the University of Maryland, is presenting Capacity Building: Baltimore, a free, two-year training program and consultancy for 20 arts and cultural organizations based in the Greater Baltimore area. Applications are available through GBCA, but must be received by December 15 so sharpen your pencils! This is an incredible opportunity for area organizations to access world-class, in depth training.

All the best,
Jeannie

P.S. Looking for the perfect gifts? Be sure to check out the many cultural fairs and markets featured on Culture Fly, GBCA's events calendar. Also, be sure to catch the 43rd annual lighting of the Washington Monument on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30pm on Mount Vernon Place!
