Looking Forward to the Maryland Film Festival and More

As we pause to take a breath, the Maryland Film Festival launches it Opening Night Shorts tomorrow, followed by an extremely exciting line up through Sunday, May 10. The Festival presents top-notch film and video work from all over the world and each year screens approximately 50 feature films and 75 short films of all varieties -- narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, and hybrid -- to tens of thousands of audience members. Better buy your tickets fast as some events are already sold out including the Premiere Writer Panel discussion featuring Atlantic magazine editor and renowned essayist and commentator Ta-Nehisi Coates, National Book Award winner James McBride, HBO producer and former journalist David Simon, and Taylor Branch, whose Pulitzer-winning three-volume history of the civil rights movement is being adapted for a six-hour miniseries. The Festival is exploring ways to expand the reach of this particular event. For information and updates, join their email list.

Please watch the GBCA Facebook page for information related community response and supportive events. Baltimore LED ART Billboard located at 1700 N. Charles Street has created a Business Recovery Program that offers free advertising for those hurt by the curfew. The goal is to generate business that will help compensate for lost wages and income to employees and business owners. They are asking for assistance in getting the word out to folks outside their network, so please share this information with your contacts.

The Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) is creating a special fund for businesses, including nonprofit organizations, which have experienced losses due to the riot of last week and its aftermath. You can learn more about the program by visiting this website.
