Executive Director’s Letter September 11, 2018

On this solemn day of remembrance, we pause to honor, pay tribute and reflect on the catastrophic events that rocked the United States 17 years ago and that continue to reverberate today in our conflicts abroad. Let’s remember that time we joined together as a country for the common good in the face of unimaginable tragedy. I take comfort in the strength of our democracy and believe the will of the people will prevail so long as we all continue to lift each other up and celebrate the things that unite us. If you are in a thoughtful place, this week consider a visit to the World Trade Center and the Top of the World in downtown Baltimore and view their 9/11 Maryland Memorial honoring the victims of the attack from our state.

On a more positive note, did you know it’s Arts Education Week? Passed by Congress in 2010, House Resolution 275 designates the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to tell the story of the transformative power of the arts in education. On its website, Americans for the Arts suggests a number of ways to join in the celebration. To get a local perspective, you can also read this blog post from Julia Di Bussolo, Executive Director of Arts Everyday.

Congratulations to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for its stunning European tour and debut at the Proms where Marin Alsop made history in 2013 as the first woman to conduct the annual Last Night of the Proms since the festival’s founding in 1895. The Proms is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually, predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in central London. The Proms are now organized and broadcast by the BBC. Each season consists of concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, chamber music concerts at Cadogan Hall, public park concert events across the UK, and children's educational events.

Button up your raincoat and batten down the hatches. Hurricane Florence is on her way!

Stay safe,

Jeannie

P.S. Don’t forget to join us tomorrow evening for the Baker Artist Awards Celebration at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Festivities begin at 6:00 pm, doors open at 5:30 pm—it’s all free and open to the public!
