Executive Director’s Letter September 18, 2018

This past weekend, the 2019 cohort of Urban Arts Leadership kicked off their year. I am excited to announce and congratulate this class of exceptional emerging leaders. They were selected by a diverse committee of professionals who are committed to racial equity and inclusion. The eight fellows will be connected to resources and professional development, and receive training, and develop new and expanded networks.

Urban Arts Leadership Cohort 2019 is Jalen Eutsey, Ariel Foster, Imani Haynes, Zoey Howell-Brown, Kayla Morgan, Nailah Russell, Fitsum Shebeshe, and Christina Yoo. As a reminder, the applications for Host Organizations to work with this amazing group are now open.

The issues of equity and inclusion are critical to the success of the creative sector. UAL is building a pipeline of talented young professionals and at the same time helps organizations adopt practices that will help ensure the success of a more diverse workplace. GBCA is extremely excited about the strength of the 2019 cohort.

Additional congratulations are in order for the 14 Baltimore organizations who have been chosen to participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Arts Innovation and Management Program. It includes grants seek to strengthen capacity at small and midsize organizations and support from the University of Maryland’s DeVos Institute of Arts Management. Participating organizations are: Arts Every Day, Baltimore Clayworks, Baltimore Concert Opera, Chesapeake Arts Center, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Creative Alliance, Jewish Museum of Maryland, Make Studio Art Program, Maryland Film Festival, Port Discovery Children’s Museum, Single Carrot Theatre, Station North Arts & Entertainment, The Neighborhood Design Center, and Young Audiences-Arts for Learning.

Finally, as GBCA’s five-year incubation of the Rubys Artists Grants programs has drawn to an end, I am happy to announce that it will now come under the management of the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation. Program Manager Sonja Cendak has assumed a new position as Program Director at the Foundation where she will continue her excellent work. GBCA is excited and proud to have fostered the success and growth of the Rubys and excited to see how it develops in the future.

Keep your umbrellas handy,

Jeannie
