Questioning Beauty: Idea vs. Quality

Is beauty objective or subjective? Can something elicit the idea of beauty without possessing the qualities traditionally associated with beauty? Can something possess beauty solely through its physical qualities? Or must idea and physical quality coexist in a work of art to truly define it as beautiful? Artists over the age of 18 working in all media are eligible to apply. The juror is David Gariff, senior lecturer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
