BlackRock Center for the Arts is now accepting entries for the juried exhibition “INK IT: Contemporary Print Practices” (selected works will be on view February 23 – March 30, 2019). Juror: Crawford Alexander Mann III, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. Entry Deadline: Sunday, January 27, 2019 (11:59 pm).
EXHIBITION OVERVIEW: The biennial “INK IT: Contemporary Print Practices” is a regional juried exhibition open to artists over the age of 18 who live, work, or attend school in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, or West Virginia. This is a non-thematic exhibition of works completed within the past three years (January 2016 – January 2019). Artists may submit entries of up to three works which are original, archivally printed and editioned prints using traditional and/or non-traditional printmaking techniques including woodcut, linocut, lithography, engraving, etching, mezzotint, screenprinting, letterpress, monoprint, monotype, collographs, chine collé, solar plate, digital printing, along with current innovations. No photographs or Giclee reproductions. Both hanging and pedestal works will be considered. All artwork must be for sale. (BlackRock retains a 30% commission on art sales.) Selection will be based on juror review of high resolution JPEG images submitted through the Submittable online submission system.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists over the age of 18 who live, work, or attend school in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, or West Virginia.
AWARDS: Juror will select works to be included in the exhibition as well as Awards for First , Second , and Third Places, as well as Honorable Mentions. The artist who receives First Place will be awarded a solo exhibition in the Terrace Gallery (upper level) at BlackRock in 2020.
EXHIBITION SPACE: The Kay Gallery is a 1500 square foot exhibition space with 16-foot-high walls topped by clerestory windows. BlackRock no longer requires the use of the cable hanging system in our galleries and now allows artwork installations which require nails, screws or other fasteners. Gallery Hours: Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.* (*also open select Sunday and evening hours when performances are offered.) JUROR OF SELECTION AND AWARDS: Crawford Alexander Mann III is the Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. He previously worked at the Chrysler Museum (Norfolk, VA) and the RISD Museum of Art (Providence, RI), following studies at Yale University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His responsibilities cover all periods of American art, from colonial to contemporary, with particular interest in the nineteenth century and in transnational exchange. For the Smithsonian American Art Museum, he is currently preparing presentation of a traveling retrospective of the Japanese American painter Chiura Obata (1885-1975), opening in November 2019, and a major exhibition on the late 19th century Grand Tour to Venice, titled “Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano,” which will begin a four-venue international tour in March 2021.
