The BMA is seeking a Director of Interpretation to spearhead the development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of in-gallery interpretation. The Director of Interpretation will create engaging interpretive content that will invite visitors to make relevant connections between the BMA’s exhibitions and collections and their own lived experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to fostering socially, intellectually, and physically accessible and inclusive visitor experiences. This position will serve as project director for a variety of interpretive initiatives related to the Museum’s robust exhibition program and continuing reevaluation of its permanent collection galleries.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the interpretive planning process for major exhibitions and renovations.
  • Overseeing in-gallery interpreters programs, including the docent program and contract gallery educators.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating audio tours, mobile phone guides, and other in-gallery technology, as required.
  • Developing gallery guides and hands-on interpretive materials.
  • Acting as a key reviewer for gallery labels.
  • Overseeing visitor testing and evaluation of interpretive materials.
  • Developing and administering work schedules, timelines, and other resources to ensure that projects meet milestones and desired outcomes.
  • Preparing and managing interpretation budgets and coordinating program contracts, proposals, and documentation.
  • Collaborating with colleagues within the education department, across the museum, and within the Baltimore community.
  • Working with curators, conservators, librarians, archivists, and educators to identify and create rich media content; marketing, designers, visitor services, and development colleagues to integrate interpretive tools into other communication strategies (website, social media, way-finding tools) and to raise awareness for new educational initiatives; and IT, digital, and collection management staff to catalogue, manage, and store new digital assets.
  • Identifying, hiring, and managing outside consultants and/or contractors including outside vendors, videographers, transcribers, and fabricators to support interpretive projects.

This full-time, exempt position reports to the Chief Education Officer.
