Maryland Center for History and Culture Seeks Fall Oral History Intern

The H. Furlong Baldwin Library at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is offering a paid oral history internship for the fall semester. The internship format is flexible for in-person or hybrid work. The intern will gain a thorough understanding of the oral history life cycle, along with experience using the archival management system ArchivesSpace, digital asset management system (DAMS) ResourceSpace, and transcription software Trint. The intern’s work will be focused on transcript editing, research, metadata and finding aid cleanup. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain experience in the oral history field, and to help increase access to MCHC collections. The intern will work directly with the Special Collections Archivist.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Oral History Intern will:

  • Create basic transcripts for oral history recordings using Trint software
  • Audit and edit transcripts in accordance with MCHC’s style guidelines
  • Edit oral history finding aids in ArchivesSpace, including writing and/or updating abstracts and historical/biographical notes
  • Conduct research to verify, enhance, and update legacy metadata
  • Consult internal and external resources to generate metadata for newly digitized items
  • Utilize controlled vocabularies to add access points to records
  • Utilize MCHC’s guidelines for inclusive and conscientious description to create records that are respectful, clear, and that minimize harm to individuals and communities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, pursuing a graduate degree in information studies, history, or a related program, or a recent graduate from such a program.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Writing proficiency
  • Close attention to detail
  • Proficient with technology and able to learn new systems and software
  • Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to commit 10-12 hours per week
  • Selected interns will undergo a background check
