Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Seeks Director of Career Development

Position Summary: provides MICA with the vision and leadership for a comprehensive professional development program, serving undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni. Applications received by March 11, 2018 are best assured of receiving full consideration.

General Purpose: In conjunction with the Associate Dean for Student Integrated Learning establishes the overall vision for professional development at MICA, in addition to providing direct service to students and alumni.

Major role functions:

  • Provides leadership and strategic vision for the nationally recognized Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development, managing a highly collaborative team of six staff members. Serves as the primary advocate for the priorities of the center with constituents.
  • Partners with senior staff, faculty members, alumni and parents as well as other constituencies regarding the importance of professional development experiences for artists, designers and educators.
  • Navigates with faculty partners the complexity of professional development needs within forty distinct majors, programs and concentrations.
  • Serves as a vital educator on and off the MICA campus.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, development and implementation of professional development programs for MICA undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni
  • Orchestrate networking and career exploration opportunities by building key relationships with alumni, faculty, parents, and local community representatives
  • Engage employers nationally and internationally in art and design industries to hire from and collaborate with MICA for internships, jobs and opportunities like sponsored projects and giving
  • Educate MICA audiences on national and local trends related to careers and professional development, and the implications for graduates of a premier art and design institution
  • Develop and sustain entrepreneurship programming through the MICApreneurship initiative to educate the campus community on entrepreneurship opportunities and equip students and alumni with the tools necessary to start a business
  • Set direction for department programming and initiatives, including large-scale educational and special events, e.g., career fairs that enhance MICA students’ success in integrating their art and design learning into a broad array of career fields and related professions
  • Serve on the MICA Professional Development Committee and coordinate initiatives related to strengthening professional development across the campus
  • Represent the Career Development Center and the professional development needs of students through speaking at events throughout the year and attending career-related/networking events in the Baltimore region and when applicable across the nation
  • Supervise Assistant Directors for Fine Art, Design + Media, Entrepreneurship and Employer Relations, as well as the Fulbright Program Coordinator, Program Coordinator and three graduate assistants
  • Explore information delivery models through the Career Center to identify those strategies that best leverage staff resources and capacities while meeting the needs of students
  • Co-supervise Peer Career Advisors, undergraduate and graduate student leaders in providing information on career and professional development topics to their peers
  • Oversee resource management, budget planning, grant reporting and donor management, while collaborating with key stakeholders in Advancement and Strategic Initiatives
  • Conduct assessment, present findings and share data with key stakeholders including the Board of Trustees, Vice Presidents, Parents, Alumni and national AICAD partner institutions
  • In coordination with the Associate Dean for Student Integrated Learning conduct the First Destination Survey and related alumni employment instruments
  • Manage the development and updating of a comprehensive website, with training videos, annotated articles and information on important dates
  • Partner with Student Affairs, Center for Identiy and Inclusion, Academic Affairs, Graduate Studies, Academic Advising, the Library, Alumni and Parent Relations, the Advancement Office, Admissions and other campus partners to capitalize on synergies/resources and convey a consistent message on careers and professional development
  • Collaborate, where appropriate, with campus partners to design and deliver programming aimed at increasing student engagement, retention and success.
  • Supervise MICA’s internship for credit program, following all Federal Labor Standards guidelines and MICA, State and Federal policies
  • Design and lead workshops on a variety of career and professional development topics, including presentations at campus events such as Parents Weekend, Open House and Orientation
  • Counsel undergraduates, graduate students and alumni during individual appointments, as needed
  • Participate in Student Affairs division and planning committees, and related programs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a related field, e.g. Student Affairs, Arts Administration, Art Education, Art or Design
  • Progressive professional experience in career services, teaching, advising, student affairs or arts administration enterprises
  • An active commitment to equity in all forms including the ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Knowledge of the professional environment and competencies for fine and commercial artists/designers and related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct strategic planning for a complex operation with an educational environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both external and internal constituencies, including the ability to conceive and present complex information to trustees, parents, donors and the MICA community
  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial, proactive style, with excellent human relations skills
  • Demonstrated ability to forge relationships and orchestrate connections on and off campus
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage a team

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Understanding of the needs and challenges facing artists, designers and educators in their career search
