Spring Internships at the Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum is pleased to offer opportunities for qualified undergraduate and graduate candidates to intern in various museum divisions throughout the year. Based on a system of supervised learning, the internships enable interns to understand how a museum operates and how to relate this experience to academic and professional goals. Credit can be arranged with your college/university.

All candidates will submit a cover letter, resume, transcript, and two letters of academic reference to [email protected] by November 15th, 2014. Please indicate your first and second choice of internship in your cover letter.

Conservation Cataloging & Digitization Intern

Duties:

Assist in the digitization and electronic cataloging of conservation documents and images associated with the examination and treatment of museum objects.

Primary Tasks
Under the supervision of the Database Administrator, and in conjunction with the Conservation Division Assistant and Conservators the intern will manage the digitization and cataloging lifecycle for historic and modern documents and media presently in analog form. This lifecycle is comprised of these primary tasks: 1) scan documents and images, 2) label and rehouse source material according archival demands 3) process digitized material in Photoshop or Adobe Acrobat and review for quality control, 4) catalog into the conservation documentation management system, 5) prepare electronic conservation records for online publishing. Additional, complementary tasks or projects related to the museum’s collection may be assigned.

Experience, Skills:

Library or museum database applications, digital imaging, scanners, photo editing software (i.e. Photoshop), research skills, proficiency with Windows computers. Ability to work independently at a computer for several hours at a time, keep large sets of information organized, excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a willingness to ask questions. Knowledge of art history and art materials and techniques preferred.

Preferred Major or Areas of Study:
Library Science/Archives, Digital Imaging / Photography, Fine Arts, Conservation Science or Art History (if other digital imaging skills are present).

Development Intern

Duties:

The Development Intern will provide general administrative support for the Development department with a focus on preparation for the Museum’s Annual Gala and Special Events; research for event needs and preparation, data entry mailings and other tasks as assigned.

Experience, Skills:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Must be detail oriented, organized and have good written communications skills. Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge a plus. Candidates should also have a good sense of teamwork.

Fundraising, Non-Profit Administration, Business Administration, Liberal Arts

Director’s Office Intern

Duties:

The Director’s Office Intern will assist with answering phones, maintaining office files, collect and distribute interoffice mail, and other office duties. Other duties will include assisting the Board Secretary.

Experience, Skills:

Previous Office experience is preferred, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office, attention to detail and a good sense of teamwork. Availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays a plus.

Non-Profit Administration, Business Administration, Liberal Arts

Public Relations Intern

Duties:

The Walters public relations internship will introduce students to the business of public relations and offer them an opportunity to be involved in daily public relations activities. Interns will work with the manager on projects such as creating press lists, drafting media advisories, pitch letters and releases, researching and analyzing targeted audiences and competitive trend tracking for industry related opportunities. Interns will gain experience in media relations, internal communications, and community relations.

Experience, Skills:

Excellent written and verbal communication, computer literacy, business communication.

Preferred Major or Areas of Study:

Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Mass Media Arts, English

In addition to the standard application materials listed above, please submit two short writing samples to be considered for this internship.

Registration Intern

Duties:

The Registration Intern will assist with projects relating to collection documentation using The Museum System (TMS) and data entry on the Walters’ rare book collection, gaining experience working in both the objects and constituent modules of TMS. The intern will also assist with collection inventories and other collections projects.

Experience, Skills:

Candidates should be highly organized and detail oriented and poses an interest in Museum Collections Management.
